Accessible pages for planning and reserving a Hill Country river stay

We are a small travel agency in Austin, Texas, and we plan stays at riverside lodges, inns and cabin resorts in the Hill Country. Anyone should be able to read about a stay, compare rivers and send us a request, whether they use a screen reader, a keyboard, a magnifier or a phone held at arm's length. This page explains what we did to make that work and where we know it still falls short.

If any part of the site gets in your way, tell us. A person in the office can walk you through a stay, the price and the reservation steps by phone or in an email thread, so nothing on these pages has to be read on screen.

Headings, form labels and moving through pages by keyboard

Each page has one main heading, and the sections under it step down in order, so a screen reader can jump from part to part. Menus and links are ordinary links with readable words on them. Every field in the request form carries a written label that stays visible after you start typing, and the nights slider can be moved with the arrow keys.

You can reach every link, button and field with the Tab key alone. A visible outline shows where you are, and the order follows the page from top to bottom.

Color contrast, zoom and prices that read aloud clearly

Body text and buttons are set in colors with strong contrast against their background, and no meaning rests on color alone. Pages reflow when you zoom to 200 percent or more, and the layout narrows to one column on a small screen.

Prices are written out in words around the figure, for example from $195 per person or from $390 for two, so a screen reader speaks the same thing a sighted reader sees.

Text alternatives for the river plans and the August figure

Each river plan drawing has a written alternative that says what it shows in a sentence. The number that orders our catalog, how much of a river's May flow is still there in August, is always given as a percentage in the text next to the stay, with the river named, so it never lives only inside a chart.

Known gaps and how to reach a person instead

A written alternative sums up a drawing in a sentence or two, so it carries less detail than the drawing itself. Lodge confirmations come from the lodges themselves, and each lodge sets its own format. If one is hard to read, tell us and we will go through it with you.

Call (512) 478-2163 from Tuesday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Central, or send an email to the address printed at the foot of every page. The request form also takes a request at any hour, and the written reply follows the schedule printed at the foot of every page: a request in by 1 p.m. on a phone day is answered by 4 p.m. that day.
